Company Overview
Los Angeles General Medical Center is the cornerstone of the safety-net for the
largest county in the United States. As one of the largest public hospitals in the US,
we are home to one of the largest GME training centers in the US, with more than
950 residents and fellows, representing nearly 1% of all post graduate trainees in the US.
Company History
Los Angeles County General was founded in 1878 as a hospital of last resort for the indigent population of Los Angeles. Its affiliation with the USC School of Medicine in 1880 formally defined it as one of the nation’s major teaching hospitals. The scope and scale of the hospital dramatically increased with the opening of the 1,000-bed Los Angeles County Hospital in 1933. A new facility with greater resilience for earthquakes and more modern spaces for the extraordinary case load of patients became operational in 2008. The name of the hospital was changed in 2023 to Los Angeles General.
Today, it remains one of the largest public hospitals in the US with over 600 beds, serving a population of 10 million. It has the fourth busiest Emergency Department in the nation and handles one third of all trauma that runs through LA County. It fully retains its academic mission with over 900 employed residents and fellows and a growing research enterprise in everything from cancer clinical trials to health services research.
The new hospital facility and its renaming to Los Angeles General not only signified the institution’s strong commitment to the care of the underserved in LA County, but it also reflected a shift in focus from being the last stop for care to embracing responsibility for the healthcare needs of the community, promoting health, offering early intervention, and expanded home care. Its pioneering program during the COVID pandemic to move oxygen therapy to the home was groundbreaking
